Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum should be ready to suit up before the first round of the NBA playoffs, but his effectiveness might be another matter.
The 7-foot center, out since mid-January with a deep bone bruise in his left knee, is a major reason why the Los Angeles Lakers played above expectations, pre- Pau Gasol. Bynum is averaging 13 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots per game. A frontcourt of Bynum, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom would bolster title aspirations.
Bynum, 20, is trying to keep his weight under control by running on a low-impact, anti-gravity treadmill, but has not yet started full basketball drills.
"His injury is all about the amount of swelling that's going to happen because of the pounding he's going to take on the court, and how long it's going to take for that to subside," said coach Phil Jackson. "It's going to be a continuing battle with that."
TNT analyst Charles Barkley predicted this week that, without Andrew Bynum, "I don't think they can win (it all)."

Surgery Possible for Andrew Bynum (NBA.com) Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum might undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee if there is no significant improvement in the next three to four weeks.
